In Movie Theaters This Weekend…

Dredd Movie Still

For me, going to the movies just isn’t the same as it was 20 years ago. Maybe it’s me, maybe it’s because I’m so distracted from being on these internets –what? with Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, etc., who needs to go to the movies?

You also have high-definition televisions — big ones — they’re so much cheaper now. It’s almost as if making the trek to the movie theater is a waste of our time.

And we won’t go into those ridiculously high movie ticket prices — popcorn, hot dog and Sugar Babies not included. Oh well, it’s only my opinion.

So what is playing at the movies this weekend? There’s DreddEnd of Watch, House at the End of The Street, Trouble with the Curveoh boy, are you excited??

I haven’t gone to the movies since 1990. My primary reason is that theaters tend to play the soundtracks louder than I would like.

I think it’s because movies end up on cable and on DVD and streamable online rather quickly — and if it doesn’t do very well at the box office, its available twice as quick. If you go with your family or even with just one other person, it can be very expensive. We’re looking at about 30 dollars just for the movie by itself for two people and if you get snacks, that’s another 8-12 dollars per person, or more. So, spending 45 + dollars can be hard.

I remember quite vividly when I went to see Casino Royale a few years ago, there was a whole family, a man with his wife and 4 teenage kids. After their snacks, I can’t imagine how much that evening cost them (cost dad because he was paying for it all). It was 30 for mom and dad and if the kids got the reduced admission, which only saves about 2-3 dollars, their tickets were probably like about $35 for the four of them combined. With all the snacks they got, their total bill had to reach up over $150. I shouldn’t have been so nosey. The dad joked with the kids that they’d be getting extra chores to pay for it. lol So, waiting to watch it at home is more cost effective.

The other thing is, if you get to a part of the movie and you didn’t hear what someone said, you can always rewind it or use the caption feature. In the theater, you are left assuming what was said. So, I definitely agree with you that it’s better watching movies at home. But will I still go to the movies? Yeah, most definitely. But I find that I don’t go nearly as often as I used to. Man, I remember we used to have all these dollar theaters and the $2 movies. Those are long gone. Do you remember all those cheap dollar movie trends in theaters?
