Sad news!! Sherman Hemsley, the actor who made the character George Jefferson famous in television’s “The Jeffersons,” has died, El Paso police tell TMZ.

Mr. Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas. It is not yet clear how he died.

He was 74.

Watch Mr. Hemsley pound his fist (0:24 mark) to make sure Arsenio gave me my props on the set of Amen! I was so proud of him doing that that day. Notice me smiling.

I remember vividly as a young kid (from ages 9 and up) of me sneaking on the set next door to watch The Jeffersons rehearse. “George Jefferson” reminded me a lot of my father!

Update: Mr Hemsley died of natural causes.
