RSS ShavarRoss.com

RSS-Shavar-Ross-comDid you know you can RSS ShavarRoss.com?  RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It allows readers like yourself to get updates from a website without you having to visit the website each time.

Many of you are already RSS’in this blog but this is just a quick note to let those who don’t know. : )

You can RSS just about any site, not just this one. So let’s say you have a lot of sites or blogs that you like to keep tabs on. Well, how do you keep up with all of them since they are constantly being updated? Well, that’s where RSS comes in. Just about every website has an RSS feed. Most websites and blogs such as mine are syndicated throughout the Internet through RSS READERS.  Sometimes you will see the words “Subscribe in a Reader” on a website.

Think of an RSS reader as your one-stop place to keep abreast of the updates on all of your favorite websites.

Okay, so now I’m gonna show you how to RSS this site. You can do the same for all your other favorite sites as well.

Step 1. The first thing you need to do is go to the website that you want to be updated on.
Step 2. Look for the universal RSS symbol. It’s almost always orange and looks like the above pic in this post. The RSS feed symbol is usually somewhere on the first page of a website. You can also find it in your web browser. If you’re using Firefox you will see it in the right hand corner of the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (http) window. If you use Internet Explorer, you should see the symbol somewhere at the top of the browser itself.

Step 3. Once you find the RSS symbol, click on it.  For instance, on my blog you can see the RSS symbol on the right hand side of the blog.  You may have to scroll down a little.

As you can also see, you can subscribe to my blog via email where you can receive daily updates of the blog directly to you email inbox.  Anyway, after you click on the RSS symbol, a new page will open up.  It’s the site’s feed page; basically a website with all the website’s latest posts (aka the feed).

Step 4. Next you’ll need to find an RSS Reader.  This is the place that will contain the RSS feeds to all of your favorite sites.  The most popular RSS reader on the Internet is Google Reader.  It’s also easy to use.  So click here to get Google Reader.  You may need to sign-up for a free Google account but don’t worry, these steps will be like second nature after a few tries.

Step 5. You should have at least  two webpages open now.  The RSS feed page and Google Reader.  So now you basically copy the link and add it to Google Reader.  So copy the link from the RSS page.  In this case the link should look like this: http://feeds.feedburner.com/shavarross Now go to Google Reader and look for the “Add Subscription” box in the top left hand corner of the page.

add-subscription

Paste the url and then click add.

Viola!  You should see that the RSS feed was added.  It’s usually at the bottom of Google Reader on the left hand side where is says “Subscriptions.”  So did you do it?  Leave me comment and let me know how it turned out.  If you still need help, feel free to leave me a comment here and I’ll try to clarify for you.

From there, you can add other interesting site feeds right from Google Reader as well. You’ll be a pro in no time but hey, don’t be no stranger ’cause you’re getting feeds now, lol. Come on back and see me some time, hear?
